This is my arduous but rewarding journey to the film location of “Crash Landing On You”. In the heart of Lake Brienz, or Lake Biel as other Swiss wild say, a romantic setting was being set that captured that heart of many television series viewers.
I traveled this long and winding journey from The Netherlands to Zurich, Switzerland by means of a simple car driving right after work just to have a glimpse on this wonderful and majestic place.
If you are a nature lover and loves calmness and serenity, this is the place to be. I experience this for myself and the type of feeling that’s manifested deep within my heart are priceless.
The majestic falls of Iseltwald of Switzerland or in the Canton Bern is one of the most beautiful film locations of Crash landing On you.
Lake Brienz: A Jewel of the Swiss Alps
Nestled in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, Lake Brienz is a pristine body of water renowned for its emerald hue, dramatic alpine surroundings, and serene ambiance. Stretching approximately 14 kilometers in length and 2.8 kilometers in width, the lake is fed primarily by glacial waters from the surrounding mountains, resulting in its iconic turquoise color. Beyond its natural beauty, Lake Brienz is a destination steeped in cultural richness and offers a myriad of outdoor activities, making it a gem in Switzerland’s tourism landscape.
The Natural Beauty of Lake Brienz
Lake Brienz lies between the villages of Brienz and Bönigen, close to the famous town of Interlaken. The lake’s setting is breathtaking: it is surrounded by rugged mountains, including the Brienzer Rothorn to the north and the Schwarzhorn to the south. The lake’s glacial origins are evident in its crystalline waters, which mirror the towering peaks above, creating a dreamlike landscape. In spring and summer, wildflowers carpet the nearby meadows, adding a splash of color to the scene, while autumn sees the surrounding forests ablaze with fiery reds and golds.
One of the most captivating sights near the lake is the Giessbach Falls. These waterfalls cascade down the mountainside directly into the lake, and visitors can explore the area via well-maintained trails. Nearby, the historic Grandhotel Giessbach offers stunning views and a glimpse into 19th-century Swiss luxury.
A Hub for Adventure and Leisure
Lake Brienz is not just a visual delight; it is also a playground for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. The lake’s calm waters are ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming during the warmer months. Cruises on traditional paddle steamers provide a more relaxed way to experience the lake, with stops at charming lakeside villages such as Iseltwald and Oberried.
For hikers, the Brienzer Rothorn offers a challenging yet rewarding ascent, either by foot or via the Brienz-Rothorn Railway, a historic steam-powered cogwheel train. The summit provides panoramic views of Lake Brienz, Lake Thun, and the distant peaks of the Swiss Alps. Cycling around the lake is another popular activity, with well-marked trails offering varying levels of difficulty.
Cultural and Historical Significance
Lake Brienz is not only a natural wonder but also a region steeped in Swiss culture. The village of Brienz is renowned for its centuries-old woodcarving tradition, which visitors can explore at the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. This museum features traditional Swiss homes and workshops, offering insights into the country’s rural heritage.
The lake’s connection to history is evident in its many legends and traditions. For example, Iseltwald, a picturesque village on the lake’s southern shore, has been the inspiration for countless Swiss folk tales and recently gained international fame as a filming location for the Korean drama Crash Landing on You.
Preserving Lake Brienz
Despite its popularity, Lake Brienz remains remarkably unspoiled, thanks to Switzerland’s commitment to environmental preservation. Local authorities and communities have implemented sustainable tourism practices to protect the lake’s delicate ecosystem. Visitors are encouraged to respect nature by minimizing waste and using eco-friendly transportation options, such as the region’s excellent network of electric trains and buses.
Conclusion
Lake Brienz is a place where natural splendor meets cultural depth, offering visitors a chance to reconnect with nature while experiencing Swiss traditions. Whether you’re seeking adventure, tranquility, or a glimpse into Switzerland’s heritage, Lake Brienz provides it all. Its stunning scenery and commitment to sustainability ensure that this alpine treasure will continue to captivate and inspire future generations.
